This month is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the Hispanic and Latina women in public finance whose leadership, expertise, and dedication continue to shape our industry in powerful ways. Their voices, experiences, and achievements inspire progress and help build a stronger, more inclusive future for all of us.

Today we celebrate Laura Barrientos, Executive Director at Moody's.

LAURA BARRIENTOS
Executive Director
Moody's
About Me:

I will be starting as the Executive Director of the local government team in the East region in Moody’s Public Finance Group in November in our New York office. I will transition from the position of Executive Director of the Utilities team in the Project and Infrastructure Group and am very excited to return to my roots in public finance.

I began my career in public finance in 1996, after graduating from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. I am fascinated by local governments and all of the responsibilities they have to their citizens, and easily found my home as an analyst in our Dallas office primarily covering local governments in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. I have since worked in a wide array of sectors including regional and local governments in LatAm, Project and Infrastructure Finance in the US and LatAm and more recently led the North American investor owned utilities team.

I also spent a number of years in our methodology development group, where my first project was working on methodologies for our Moody’s Local offices in Argentina and Peru.

On Being a Hispanic Woman in Public Finance:

I really cherish the opportunity to be a Hispanic woman in Public Finance and in the finance world at this time. The number of Hispanic women in the field is still relatively small, and I am fortunate to be in a position to support and mentor young Hispanic women in public finance careers. It is one of the reasons I am so thrilled to be back in the sector. I also very much value my Colombian heritage, and as I visit ‘home’ or run into other Colombians I realize how much of my collaborative spirit and can-do attitude is cultural.

Fun Fact:

I never crawled as a baby. Just scooched and one day got up and walked. To this day, it is difficult for me to sit still!

Favorite Advice:

“Hope is not a plan”. I don’t know where I first heard it, but it has certainly stuck with me!
